Springfield Convent of the Holy Rosary, referred to as Springfield, is an independent Dominican Catholic Convent School, set in the beautiful suburb of Wynberg. Founded in 1871 by the Dominican sisters from Cabra, Ireland, the school is steeped in almost 150 years of history. The name, Springfield, relates to all the spring water under our grounds!
Our school’s beautiful environment is enhanced by the liquidamber trees that line the School’s Avenue. Trees that symbolise our four school terms as the green leaves in January turn brown by April, shed all their leaves in July and blossom again in October. A school with a rose garden. A school where an owl hoots the arrival of a new year. A school where the squirrels scramble for food. A school where Egyptian geese play on the lawns. A School of walls hewn from stone. A school of colonnades. A school where a Victorian fountain opens into an avenue of palm trees surrounding a pathway towards the Shrine of Our Lady and the scene of Calvary built in 1922. A School Convent in the historic hunting lodge of Lord Charles Somerset. A school with St Dominic’s Chapel with stained glass windows capturing the glistening sun. The beautiful, history and traditions of Springfield combine with the new to create a different, peaceful teaching-learning environment for nearly 1,000 girls from nursery to matriculation level.
Springfield’s offer of intellectual, physical, cultural, social, emotional, moral and spiritual education is special, as our past record and current results show. Each girl is unique and given the opportunity to reach her potential in so many areas. We offer a teaching-learning environment where girls explore their passions and grow into independent, confident young ladies who have the ability to think, listen, care and achieve.
Springfield continues to keep up-to-date with modern trends and technologies. The Building sub-committee of the Springfield Board works hard to ensure that there are ongoing capital investments and developments. Since 2010, new additions to our Springfield Campus include our pre-school building and facilities, the Fra Angelico Art Centre, the Astro Turf, newly-renovated Pavilion and two Senior School Computer Laboratories. The Dominican Sisters also built a new Retirement Centre at the entrance to Convent Road. In 2017, the building of additional Music classrooms with an outside auditorium for concerts as well as an upgrade to the Senior Primary classrooms will commence. Strategic plans for the next five years are under discussion to further enhance our beautiful school.
Whether your daughter strives for academic excellence, sporting acumen, cultural expertise and/or spiritual growth, Springfield offers each and everyone the opportunity to grow and develop their passions. In 1871 the vision of Cabra Dominican Sisters, to ensure that girls receive education, has enabled Springfield to offer quality education over the past 146 years. Through Outreach, our girls are engaged in activities and projects to assist scholars in disadvantaged communities. Sadly, this is not the norm worldwide as Malala Yousafzai stated so bravely in 1997, “I don’t mind if I have to sit on the floor at school. All I want is education. And I’m afraid of no-one.” May we continue to fight for the right of all children to receive education in our world today.
Our motto, Veritas (Truth), reminds all pupils, past pupils, parents and staff of the values that we practise and hold close to our hearts.
Welcome to Springfield and the warmth that it embraces.
