About Us
Welcome to the Springfield Past Pupils Union (PPU)!
The PPU of Springfield is one of the most active Alumni Unions of all the schools in South Africa. It aims to bring together the old girls and past teachers of Springfield Convent School, in order to keep them in touch with the school and each other. The PPU acts as a launching board for organisers of ‘Special Year’ reunions giving the most recent information we have on hand when individuals set out to bring their class back together after 5, 10 or even 50 or 55 years. As you begin new chapters of your life, we want you to know that Springfield will always be a vital part of who you are as you have spent many happy times there
The PPU has created the necessary link that completes the circle of primary and secondary education in bringing past pupils back to a place, they hold so dear to their hearts.
We have a newsletter that is sent out twice a year that provides past pupils with event dates and updates of fellow Springfielders both locally and abroad. If you have any news, views or photographs please mail them through to the editor, Daniella Charles (Arendse, 1994) daniella.charles@santam.co.za so that we may put it into the newsletter. Our next newsletter will be posted early January, so watch the post as your first one will be arriving then! In order to keep our records as current as possible, please inform us of any change of address (postal and electronic), mobile and other telephone numbers as soon as possible.
We hope that you will be a regular visitor at PPU events and please feel free to contact our webmaster, Marion Thomas (Adams, 1997) at mamadu06@gmail.com should you have any queries. Alternatively, you can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Reunions
There are two Reunions held annually:
- The AGM (held in March usually) incorporates the formal structure of the PPU whilst allowing the past pupils to come along and enjoy some time with old friends.
- The second reunion is held in August and coincides with the school's annual Art Exhibition that is held in the Art School (old Carmel buildings). Though this reunion is targeted primarily at those who matriculated within the last 10 - 15 years, anyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the evening with us.
St. Dominic's Day Mass
A Mass is said especially for the past pupils on a Saturday in August in order to commemorate the founder of the Dominican Order of Nuns, St. Dominic. All past pupils and their families are welcome to attend. In keeping with the community upliftment and promoting social responsibility, the PPU usually nominates a charitable organisation that is in need and appeal to all those attending the Mass to bring along whatever goods may be required by the chosen organisation. Every year we are overwhelmed by the generosity that our past pupils show, which is evident that their time at Springfield was indeed instrumental in shaping women who are willing to help build communities in whichever way they can.
The PPU Newsletter
We have two Newsletters that are published annually which go out to subscribing members. These are sent out in January and July respectively.
Opera in a Convent Garden (OCG)
The PPU collaborates with the Rotary Club and the School in order to produce “Opera in a Convent Garden” (OCG) which is held on the first Sunday in February annually. OCG has been running since 2003 and is still going strong. The money raised is divided three ways and used for charitable projects by Rotary, or building of houses for Habitat for Humanity by the School or used to assist in the funding of tuition via bursaries through the PPU.
PPU Bursaries
We have two Bursaries and offer the Mother Angels’ Award at Prize Giving.
- Past Pupils Bursary
- St. Dominic's Bursary
